We do it because as per the mythological story, a Great devotee of Lord Vishnu- Prahlada (son of a whiz king Hanyakashipu who thought that he was above everything and was the great Lord). He punished his son for worshipping Lord Vishnu and forced him to sit on fire along with his sister Holika who was blessed that no fire could burn her. But with God grace Holika burned and Prahlada remained alive.
